How to choose the chamois pad in your bib shorts

Technical guide SS 2026

Choosing yourchamois pad

The chamois pad is the single most important factor in how comfortable a pair of bib shorts is. Here are all the criteria to make the right choice for the length of your rides.

Based on the length of your rides

Short rides
Under 2 hours
High intensity
Firm foam, low profile. The goal is freedom of movement and power transfer without any interference.
Long distances
3 hours and more
Endurance
Multi-density pad with gel inserts. The goal is to absorb vibrations hour after hour without creating painful pressure points.

The 4 key criteria

Foam density
The higher it is, the longer the comfort lasts. Foam that bottoms out after an hour no longer offers any protection at all.
Zoned construction
Each zone of the pad is calibrated to the pressure points specific to cycling. A flat, uniform pad is a sign of poor quality.
Anatomical shape
The pad must be specific to men or women. Pelvic geometry and contact points differ, and a pad that isn't adapted will inevitably cause chafing.
Antibacterial treatment
On long rides, heat and moisture encourage bacterial growth. An antibacterial treatment reduces irritation and keeps your skin healthy.
For rides of 3 hours and more, go for a premium multi-density chamois pad with gel inserts. It's the most worthwhile investment you can make in long-term comfort.

Gel inserts: why they change everything

Gel inserts are the next level up in chamois pads. Foam absorbs static compression, but gel absorbs the dynamic vibrations coming from the tarmac, bumps and the drivetrain. On a 4-hour ride, the difference is night and day.

  • Vibration damping — gel dissipates the energy of impacts instead of passing it on
  • Pressure distribution — gel moulds to the exact shape of your contact points
  • Shape retention — gel doesn't flatten like foam under repeated pressure
  • ORIZN bib shorts — the long-distance pad features multi-density gel inserts designed for rides lasting several hours
